Political Intrigue at Toledo's 1908 G.A.R. Encampment

Lourdes University Lifelong Learning Lecture
10:00 AM, Tuesday July 9

In the fall of 1908, Toledo captivated the nation by hosting the 42nd annual Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). The GAR was the largest of Union Army veterans' organization and the most powerful single-issue political lobby of the late nineteenth century, helping to elect five postwar presidents from its own membership. The city underwent extensive preparations and was adorned like never before, setting the stage for an event that attracted nearly 200,000 visitors. Although the Encampment itself was a resounding success and dominated the headlines that week, the undercurrents of presidential politics also made waves, particularly with the appearance of presidential candidate William Howard Taft.

Join Tedd Long as he guides us through a historical journey, exploring the political intrigue surrounding the 1908 G.A.R. Encampment.
